Acceleration..... I don't know-no weird but funny title this time!

Hello! Sorry about not posting much last month, I guess the universe just didn’t want us to go back to school just yet. But we are back now! So, I get to write a wonderful blog for all of you. This week we are talking about acceleration!

Acceleration is the change in velocity divided by the time it takes for the change to occur. The formal for acceleration is acceleration = final speed - initial speed / time. One example is when you are riding a bike. You are initially going 10 meters a minute, but you speed up to go to 15 meters per minute. You sped up that much in 5 minutes. It would be:

There are three ways to accelerate: positive, negative, and changing directions. Positive acceleration is when you are speeding up. For this, we can just look above at the example I just used. You are riding a bike. You are initially going 10 m/m, but you speed up to go to 15 m/m. You sped up that much in 5 minutes. I would be 5 m/m / 5 m which would equal 1 m/m. Negative acceleration, also known as deceleration, is when you are slowing down. So, you are still riding your bike. You are currently at 15 meters per minute, but you decide to slow down to 5 meters a minute because you are tired. You do this in 2 minutes. Then, it would be -10 m/m (5m/m - 15 m/m) / 2 minutes. That would equal -5 m/m. Changing directions with acceleration is a tad different. It is when the object changes direction, also known as changing velocity, it accelerates. Not too hard, right?

Acceleration can be graphed as well. If you look down below, there is a picture of a graph. The line rises, remains constant, and then falls. When it rises, it means the acceleration is increasing, and opposite for when the line falls. When it is constant, that means it doesn't change. When it is like the on below, a “frowny” face, it means it is negative acceleration. When it is like a “smiley” face, it is positive acceleration. Simple!
